Amid escalating tensions in Manipur, clashes erupted between students and security forces near Raj Bhawan in Imphal on Tuesday. In response, the government has taken drastic measures, suspending internet services in the state's five valley districts and imposing an indefinite curfew in the Imphal East and Imphal West districts. The decision was prompted by growing unrest among students, leading to heightened security concerns.
Earlier in the day, the state government had issued a notification for the suspension of internet services across the state for five days. However, officials clarified that this restriction would not extend to the hill districts. According to the Home Department's order, the suspension covers mobile data services, Lease Lines, VSATs, Broadband, and VPN services in the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching.
The official notification stated: "There is an imminent danger of loss of life and/ or damage to public/private property, and widespread disturbances to public tranquillity and communal harmony, as a result of inflammatory material and false rumours, which might be transmitted/circulated to the public through social media/messaging services.”
