President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, with the nation approaching the third year of the Civil War. This was 83 years following the abolishment of slavery in Philadelphia. History tells us that the Emancipation Proclamation was when Lincoln freed the slaves. That's not at all truth. Word of the edict didn't reach Texas for two and a half years-June 19, 1865. Ergo, Juneteenth.
