"There was a high degree of trust without the checks'

Richard Tice, Reform UK's deputy leader, described Justin Welby as the "worst Archbishop in living memory".

The former Archbishop of Canterbury resigned last week amid outrage at the Makin report, following an independent review.

It detailed how the horrific abuse of more than 100 children and young men was covered up within Anglican circles.

Mr Tice confirmed he attended at least one of the Dorset camps in the late 1970s, where Smyth would brutally lash victims with a cane, in a garden shed at his home near Winchester.
