India’s retail inflation -- measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) -- in December 2023 stayed well above the Reserve Bank of India’s comfort range, rising to a four-month high of 5.69 per cent according to the data of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Friday. The CPI data for the month of December based on items including food, housing, apparel, electronics, and medical care, edged up from 5.6 per cent in November, led by increase in prices of vegetables, pulses, and spices, the data shows.
The annual inflation based on CPI was 5.72 per cent in the year-ago month. The sequential uptick in the headline CPI inflation in December 2023 was entirely led by the food and beverages segment, with all the other subgroups either reporting an easing or similar YoY prints in December 2023 compared to the previous month. Within the food segment, vegetables was the main factor, even as seven of the 12 subsegments witnessed a moderation in their YoY inflation print in the month.
