The EPFO has traditionally been heavily invested in debt instruments, with a large portion of its funds allocated to such investments. However, in a bid to diversify its portfolio and potentially achieve higher returns, the EPFO began venturing into equity markets through ETFs starting in the financial year 2015-16. This move was initially characterized by a conservative approach, with the EPFO dedicating 5% of incremental deposits to equities. Over time, this allocation was gradually increased to 10%, indicating a growing confidence in the potential of equity investments.
