Sweet Diwali delights

The end of October always marks Diwali and households around the world and in South Africa are preparing for a celebration of tradition, food and community. Chef Yudhika Sujanani said that during the Hindu festival of lights, the role of food plays in the celebration cannot be underscored enough.

"It's all about the food," she said. "Everyone looks forward to having a huge feast on Diwali."

Sweet treats, in particular, hold a place of honour on the Diwali table. "We prepare lots of celebratory sweets meant to sweeten the New Year," she said. From savoury dishes to decadent desserts, the menu for Diwali is as diverse as it can be extravagant.

Each household brings its own spin to the Diwali feast said Sujanani. "Some homes observe a completely vegetarian feast, while others, particularly in the south Indian community, indulge in a lavish seafood spread."
