The central government is not inclined to liberalize Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the tobacco sector, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday.

The minister, on the sidelines of an industry event in New Delhi, also indicated that the government is rather considering tightening the norms for FDI in the tobacco industry. The government is considering putting FDI restrictions on any franchise of tobacco products, trademarks and any branding of tobacco and similar substitutes. Currently, FDI in the manufacturing of tobacco products in India is not permitted under government regulations.
