WHAT IS PCOS?
PCOD is a syndrome where amounts of androgens (male sexual characteristic hormones) are produced in the ovaries interfering with the monthly periods. Common symptoms of PCOS in women include missed or irregular periods as well as frequent disruptions in ovulation thus complicating chances of conceiving. It is sometimes associated with insulin resistance, where the body is unable to process insulin properly. This results in high levels of insulin which leads to increased production of androgens by the ovaries and therefore creates problems of ovulation hence PCOS symptoms such as weight gain, acne and hairiness.
HOW PCOS AFFECTS FERTILITY
The main factors include irregular or absence of ovulation by women with PCOS and hence are unable to predict their fertile days accurately. If pregnant, women with PCOS have hormonal fluctuations which can lead to unwanted pregnancies, miscarriages, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia.
