  • Bangladesh Army chief gives 45-minute notice to its longest-serving PM to scoot; Sheikh Hasina lands at Hindon air base with buzz about asylum

She was received by Air Officer Commanding Sanjay Chopra.

It was not immediately clear if the beleaguered Prime Minister was seeking asylum or, as some reports suggested, was in a transit halt en route to London. The speculation about the asylum was a natural corollary of her good relations with India and personal rapport with PM Modi.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met her in the evening at the Hindon air base, which is some 30 km from Delhi. PM Modi was briefed on the situation by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

There was no word whether Modi will meet Hasina. However, the Cabinet Committee on Security met at PM Modi's official residence and discussed the turmoil in neighbouring Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Army gave Hasina a 45-minute notice to scoot and she did not even get a chance to address the nation. Army Chief General Waker-UzZaman announced her resignation in a televised address to the nation and said an interim government would be formed.

Zaman, 58, who took over as army chief on June 23, said he had held "fruitful" talks with leaders of all major political parties he had "invited" and would soon meet President Mohammed Shahabuddin to discuss the way ahead. "The country is going through a revolutionary period," he declared.
