Germans began Saturday mourning another violent attack and their shaken sense of security after a Saudi doctor drove a black BMW into a Christmas market teeming with holiday shoppers on Friday evening, killing at least five people, including a small child, according to Spiegel. Some 200 people were injured in what police called a deliberate attack.
Quoting Bild, German public-service broadcaster ARD and other media, the Guardian reported that 41 people were seriously injured in the attack. In addition, 86 people were treated with significant injuries in hospital, while 78 people suffered light injuries.
Authorities arrested a suspect identified as Taleb A, a 50-year-old medical doctor from Saudi Arabia who has been practicing medicine in Bernburg, about 40 km from Magdeburg at the site of the attack.
