The second girder on the south side of the Gopal Krishna Gokhale bridge has finally fallen into its place. Spanning 90 metres in length, the heavy-duty structure was pushed into its slot in two parts; first 25 metres and then the rest 65 metres. The feat marks a significant milestone in the project's second phase. While the initial portion was placed on the eastern side of the railway section on September 4, the remaining part was slid further in the intervening night of September 8-9, said the BMC. In the next few days, the girder will be gradually lowered to a height of eight meters from its current position (14-15 metres). This will allow it to be placed securely on the RCC support columns along the road.
