With Marathi being granted classical language status, the State School Education Ministry is set to mandate Marathi as a compulsory subject in all schools across Maharashtra from the upcoming academic year, including those affiliated with CBSE, ICSE, and SSC boards.
At an informal meeting with media personnel at Mantralaya on Tuesday, School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse said, "This step underscores the cultural importance of Marathi. To ensure its effective implementation, we aim to roll out this policy rigorously in the coming days."
He also emphasised the need for all Marathi teaching staff to be proficient in the language. To ensure compliance, the department is considering introducing a language proficiency test for school staff.
