In a brand-new monsoon season, the same old story of flooded railway tracks, waterlogged roads and airport runways played out in the city on Monday. After more than 300mm of rain came pelting down in the six hours between 1am and 7am, there was flooding for several hours thereafter, disrupting buses, planes and trains.
Trains were especially affected on Central Railway, which had not cleared garbage and muck from several stretches of tracks. Fast trains between CSMT and Thane and Harbour line services were suspended because of waterlogging, according to the CR’s chief public relations officer, Swapnil Nila.
The BMC too was caught napping since its pre-monsoon preparations were not complete, despite complaints from former corporators, like Ravi Raja. Flood-prone areas such as King’s Circle and other subways were waterlogged, affecting BEST buses. As a precautionary measure, the civic body declared a holiday for all BMC, government and private schools and colleges.
Two teenage girls were rescued by the civic team after a mudslide on the hills at Vikhroli Park, while 39 branches and trees collapsed in 24 hours. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.
