Just hours before the grand Olympic procession on the River Seine, France descended into chaos. Its high-speed rail network was hit by acts of arson with vandals igniting fires at key facilities, bringing trains to a halt and affecting around 800,000 passengers - including athletes and spectators heading to the Games.
Two of the four trains carrying Olympic athletes to Paris were also stopped hours before the opening ceremony, due to the coordinated sabotage.
If that were not bad enough, France's weather service has predicted huge downpours between 6pm and midnight. This could spell a 'disaster' for the open-air ceremony in the heart of Paris, with more than 300,000 spectators expected to line the banks of the river Seine as athletes cruise by on riverboats.
