Oropouche invades US, 8K taken ill

A little-known disease called Oropouche, spread by insect bites, is now worrying health officials in the US.

The Lancet, in its recent editorial, called it a "mysterious threat in recent times".

Since the spread is mostly travel-related, India has to be on the lookout, especially Kerala where most infections first take roots and more so as the new virus is a 'cousin' of the Zika virus which has been common in the state since 2021.
