In the largest single-day clemency act in modern U.S. history, President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of approximately 1,500 individuals who were released to home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic and pardoned 39 Americans convicted of non-violent crimes.
The commutations, announced Thursday, apply to individuals who have served at least one year under home confinement. These releases were initially implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19, which affected one in five prisoners at its peak, according to an Associated Press tally.
