Ricardo dos Santos said he had been robbed of faith in the police after the officers stopped him and his partner, the British athlete Bianca Williams, and lied about him having cannabis. Both athletes are black, and Dos Santos fears the officers, found guilty of gross misconduct, were driven by institutional racism, which the Met continues to deny.
Dos Santos was speaking after a police disciplinary tribunal sacked PC Jonathan Clapham, 31, and PC Sam Franks,29, having found they had lied when they claimed the athlete, who has never taken drugs or even alcohol, had the smell of cannabis on his person or in his car. The sacking of police officers over a stop and search is rare. Officers from the Met's territorial support group stopped Williams and Dos Santos while they were driving in Maida Vale, London, on 4 July 2020.
They were returning from training with their baby in a Mercedes car, which officers had claimed could have been be linked to gang activity.
