Pete Knapton served in the Royal Marines for 25 years. He has no family, and his wife sadly died back in 1994. Recently, he has had to give up his car due to health issues, and he was desperately in need of a mobility scooter to get out to collect his prescriptions and weekly shopping.
Born in 1935, Pete, originally from Yorkshire, joined the Marines at the age of 17. He moved to Plymouth and was ‘married to a Plymouth girl’. Pete served on HMS Ark Royal in 1955 and he has been all over the globe, including on posts to Africa and Borneo while in the Marines.
Southway resident Lisa Whitcombe met Pete six weeks ago in a local Tesco store and saw he was struggling. Kind-hearted Lisa helped with Pete’s shopping bags and walked him to his car. She made sure Pete got back home safely, and when she got to his place she realised he needed ‘a bit of help’.
Lisa noticed that Pete was a little shaky at the wheel, and he has since stopped driving. Lisa then networked with military and exmilitary service people online and started fundraising for Pete. Now, Lisa and several other kindhearted people across the UK are raising funds to get the 89-year-old the mobility scooter he needs.
