The Asian hornet is a highly predative non-native species from East Asia. It has spread rapidly throughout Europe after being inadvertently introduced in 2004. The hornets enter the UK via transport and pose a significant threat to the UK's wildlife.
Residents are being asked to report sightings of the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) through the Asian Hornet Watch app, which has been designed to record and help the early detection of the hornets, which measure around 3.5 cm and have bright orange heads.
