FIRESTONE Bay has officially become the city’s newest official bathing site after a campaign to ensure the quality of the water.
An 18-month-long campaign, led by Plymouth MP Luke Pollard, has come to fruition with the waters off Firestone Bay and Devil’s Point formally designated by Defra as an official bathing site.
The recognition ensures the water quality is regularly tested by the Environment Agency and made publicly available.
The campaign was launched by Mr Pollard in January 2022 after reports of sewage being routinely discharged into seas and rivers across the country.
In April 2021 locals and activists had themselves launched a crowd funder to help pay for a slew of improvements to Firestone Bay, including installing a defibrillator.
By May of that year around £15,000 had been raised and a host of businesses linked to the water had given their seal of approval to the efforts to improve the beach and waterfront.
