Bid to find 'prehistoric Janners' burial ground

AN ancient burial site built by 'prehistoric Janners' could be hidden beneath a mound in a field in Plymouth. Volunteers are preparing to dig at the site where a Neolithic henge or long barrow may be under what is currently a farmer's field.

Howard Jones, who learned about the site four years ago and is now itching to start excavating work this autumn, said: "The farmer says it is just a normal mound, he has grown crops on it all his life, as has his dad.

But what if it is not just a mound in a farmer's field? What if somebody put it there?" He added: "What if it was built by prehistoric Janners 2,000 years before the pyramids, 1,000 years before Stonehenge? Nobody knows.

I don't know. Everybody gets the chance to make up their own mind." He said that when the dig starts, a team of volunteers will be 'looking for prehistoric Janners.
