A TEAM of healthcare assistants from the charity Marie Curie are working at Derriford Hospital’s Emergency Department in a pilot scheme to provide greater support for patients who are at the end of their life.
The team of healthcare assistants (HCAs) are working alongside the existing hospital specialist end-of-life care staff, to provide supportive clinical care, emotional support, and a listening ear to ensure patients are not alone at end of life.
Hospital bosses say the pilot, designed to improve the experiences of palliative and end of life patients in the Emergency Department (ED), has been running since February 2024 and has already had a positive impact on staff, patients, carers and families.
Shaen Milward, End of Life Lead at the hospital, said: “Our combined End of Life team at UHP works so hard. They are really special people who provide outstanding care to patients at the end of their lives. These inspirational staff have significantly impacted experience of end of life care in the Emergency Department.”
