PLANS have been submitted to allow an annex of a mansion built for a duke in Plymouth to be permanently turned into a shelter for rough-sleepers.
The winter-time night shelter at Hamoaze House, in George Street, Mount Wise a listed building in Devonport built in 1795 for the Duke of Richmond - is currently used as a day centre for drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
Planning permission permits temporary use of the east/right wings of the building as a winter night shelter for homeless persons. That permission, though, only allowed use between October 1 and March 31, and runs out on March 31, 2024.
Plans have now been submitted to extend the night shelter to an all-year-round provision, 365 days per year, from 10 pm to 8 am, Monday to Sunday. Subject to approval being granted, it would aim to continue to provide somewhere for rough sleepers to stay the night, when needed.
