POLICE in Plymouth will be carrying a drug which reverses the effects of an overdose as part of their first aid kit.
Along with community workers, they are being trained to use an antidote for opium-based drugs called naloxone, as Plymouth attempts to reduce drug deaths, which are higher than the national average.
Speaking to the city council's health and wellbeing board, public health consultant Kamal Patel said Derriford Hospital was one of only three hospitals in the country discharging people who have taken opiate overdoses following treatment with naloxone.
He said £2.4 million will be invested this year in drug and alcohol treatment and recovery, double that received from government in the last financial year.
