BUSINESSES are calling for action as police tackle a crime wave in Plymouth city centre.
Drug users, street drinkers, shoplifters, vandals, aggressive beggars and gangs of unruly youths have been making life a misery for city centre traders in recent weeks.
At a meeting with Devon and Cornwall Police, Plymouth Against Retail Crime (Parc), Plymouth City Council and Crimestoppers UK, business bosses and managers reported a litany of theft, criminal damage, and abuse and intimidation towards staff and customers.
Steve Hughes, chief executive of Plymouth City Centre Company, said: “We can’t tolerate this any more.” Businesses were reassured that action will be taken, and a campaign has begun urging businesses and the public to report crime so intelligence can be gathered and police can catch offenders.
Crimestoppers UK, a national charity, told businesses it is making Plymouth’s city centre a focal point for action, and regional manager Karen MacDonald urged businesses, and the public, to supply “quality information” anonymously.
