Daughter pays tribute to 'little local celebrity'

THE family of a 93-year-old Plymouth man dubbed ‘a local celebrity’ because of how many people he knew from different walks of life across the city have paid tribute to him, following his sudden death

Alfred Charles Edward Nott, better known by his nickname Ted, was a retired carpenter who in his younger years was a keen amateur footballer. His voluntary work included helping out at local youth centres, giving talks about wartime life in primary schools, and helping out at a local garage.

Ted, who lived in Honicknowle for more than 30 years, passed away on Saturday, April 29. Just two days earlier, he had left his home to be cared for at St James’s Lodge, in Stoke, where he died with his daughter, Ellie, and granddaughter, Illice, by his side. The dad-of-two had been living with cancer for many years and his health then deteriorated.

Heartbroken by his death, Ellie said: “We thought he would live forever. He had prostate cancer for a long time but he was 93 and he was tired and his time had come.

“He was like a little local celebrity of Plymouth, it seems, because so many people knew him. Everywhere we went, people would say hello to him. He was always getting stopped by random people, especially when walking through town.
