Dinan and Hay make light work of cold conditions

IN Men's B Division, despite subzero temperatures and more layers worn by Dominic than an Arctic expedition, a very enjoyable match was played between Arash Dinari and Lawrence Hay against Alex Stephenson and Dominic Sivewright.

The scoreline didn't reflect some excellent rallies and a good standard of play with Arash and Lawrence winning 6-1, 6-0, 6-2.

The differing playing styles of Ross Bunney and Jon Jacobs caused Steve Matcham and Dave Gale some problems. Despite Ross serving well, Steve and Dave played consistently to win 6-2, 6-2, 6-5.

Despite Lester Ellicott and Richard Turner making good use of the lob, it was the experienced pairing of John Putman and sub Chris Shorter who won 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

Andrew Regan and Pete Ireland played played consistently well to beat John Putman and sub Steve Matcham 6-5, 4-6, 6-3.

A blisteringly cold evening brought out some of the best tennis for James Driscoll and Mark Skerton when they played Steve Matcham and Dave Gale. It was tightly balanced at one set all but James and Mark were too strong on the night and won 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Both Rich Rawlings and Kamran Khan and Sean Wolstenholme and Simon Dixon looked rusty after the festive, break but Rich and Kamran took a 4-2 lead in the first set before Sean and Simon fought back to force a tie-break.

Tension was high and some excellent play by Sean and Simon saw them take the tie-break 7-5. However, Rich and Kamran soon found their groove to win 5-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The Men's A match between Alex Cox and Matt Bowers against Tom Pantling and Sam Williams resulted in a tense, high-quality battle.

The first set passed quickly with Tom and Sam dominating the net. The second set was tight with all players contributing to an extremely close tiebreak set with Alex getting a vital angled cross-court volley to level up the match at one set all. In the third set it was Alex and Matt playing better and they won 2-6, 6-5, 6-2.
