THE former editor of The Herald and Western Morning News is seriously ill in hospital after being knocked off his bicycle in a "horrific" hit-and-run incident.
Alan Qualtrough is being treated in Plymouth's Derriford Hospital for serious injuries sustained when a moped carrying two people collided with his bicycle and sped off, leaving him lying in the road.
His wife, Dr Hannah Wood, yesterday called the moped riders' actions "senseless, hateful and callous" She said Mr Qualtrough could have been killed had he not been wearing a helmet.
"It's shocking that people can think of doing something like that," she said. "It's unfathomable to me!"
Police are investigating the incident, which happened at about 9.50am on Monday on Mount Gould Road, Plymouth. An investigation has started and officers want to hear from witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage.
