ONE of the leading figures in the girl guiding movement in Devon has said she was 'amazed' to be included in the New Year's Honours list, with the award of the Order of the British Empire Medal (BEM).
Rosemary Howell is now 95, and has also played a key role in the establishment of Lukesland Gardens, near Ivybridge, together with her husband.
While her award was given for 'services to girl guiding and the community in Devon, Mrs Howell modestly said she did not think she had done enough to merit inclusion on the honours list.
She said: "I was absolutely amazed really, I don't think I've done enough for this, but people have been very generous in congratulating me.
"I feel very honoured, and I am very glad I lived long enough for it, as I am very old!" Mrs Howell was a girl guide herself from the age of 10 - now 85 years ago before running units across Devon.
