An expert in turning around troubled businesses has ridden to the rescue of 10 beleaguered pizza takeaways and wants to open more around the South West.
Londoner Jabbar Mumtaz has just acquired the franchise for all the Papa John's outlets in Devon and Cornwall. after the firm that had been running them went bust.
Nine of the stores are now back open and another will start trading again in January. About 100 jobs have been saved. "When I took over I kept them all on," said Mr Mumtaz. "I didn't make anyone redundant." Last month, it was reported that Renz Restaurants Ltd, which had the franchise for Papa John's in Devon and Cornwall, had gone into liquidation leaving debts of more than £400,000. Papa John's bosses said the franchisee had been "underperforming".
Mr Mumtaz is now in charge of the three Plymouth outlets - in Mutley Plain, Woolwell and St Budeaux - as well as seven others in the South West. The takeaways in Plymouth, Exeter, Exmouth, Newton Abbot, Paignton, Torquay and Newquay are all trading. Barnstaple is due to reopen in late January.
Mr Mumtaz has been living in Plymouth now for a couple of months and said: "I like Plymouth.
