Bridget Phillipson, MP for Houghton and Sunderland South, insisted the position was not a U-turn despite having seemingly advocated in the past for private schools to be stripped of tax breaks afforded by their charitable status.
She had previously spoken of "scrapping charitable tax status for private schools to fund the most ambitious state school improvement plan in a generation".
