THE evacuation of inmates from HMP Dartmoor was due to begin yesterday after high levels of radon gas were found at the Victorian prison.
Around 175 inmates were due to be transferred from the Princetown prison yesterday to other jails in the area, with prisoners moved in batches of 40.
The evacuation comes after peak radon levels detected at HMP Dartmoor in 2020 and 2023 were 10 times the recommended workplace limit. The 2023 level was the highest recorded, with a measurement of 3,123 bq m-3.
