They come from the same age group as Freddie Issaka and Caleb Roberts, who signed their first professional contracts on their 17th birthdays and already have had first team experience. All four of them were regulars for Argyle under-18s this season as they won the EFL Youth Alliance South West Division as well as Merit League One.
Matthews, who comes from Newquay and has been with Argyle since the age of 10, is primarily a central defender but can play in midfield as well. He played in some of the Pilgrims' pre-season games last summer and made his first team debut as a 119th minute substitute for Ashley Phillips at the end of extra-time in the 4-1 FA Cup fourth round replay defeat by Leeds United at Home Park in February.
