Gaza death toll over 40,000 as fresh ceasefire talks start

A new round of Gaza ceasefire talks started in Qatar’s capital Doha yesterday – as the death toll in the Palestinian enclave moved past 40,000.

Israel’s spy chief, the head of the CIA and his Egyptian counterpart plus Qatar’s prime minister were involved in the talks. Hamas did not join the behind-closed-door discussions directly, but mediators Egypt and Qatar planned to consult with them afterwards.

After 10 months of war and multiple stalled attempts to end the bloodshed and release more than 100 Israeli and foreign hostages still being held in Gaza, the latest talks have been given an added gravity by fears of a revenge attack by Iran on Israel.

Iran has threatened a response to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran late last month. Some Iranian officials have suggested that only a ceasefire deal in Gaza would hold them back from direct retaliation.

Golden boots shine bright for Kane on winning night

He wore golden boots. And he has won them too of course. Three as the Premier League's top scorer, one for outscoring everyone else in a World Cup. It was a fitting way to mark Harry Kane's century of caps, though. Not the most fitting: that came after the presentations. England 2-0 Finland was Kane 2-0 Finland, a golden night for the golden boots.

Kane scores twice as he celebrates his 100th cap

As much as this match rightfully became about Harry Kane, there was something else it resembled as Lee Carsley’s England fluidly worked the ball to the centurion for his 67th and 68th international goals. It was like one of the top Premier League teams patiently moving a Championship side around until the gaps presented themselves.
