Inadequate sleep can affect immune system

Poor sleep can affect the functioning of our immune system, raise the risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity, and can lead to chronic fatigue, reducing overall productivity and quality of life, says Dr Vineeth Mohan, consultant psychiatrist at Rajagiri Hospital Aluva, in an interview with Anna Jose.

● What is the role of good sleep in ensuring mental health?

Sleep is a physiological state of unconsciousness. Although you are physically resting during sleep, a lot of restorative processes happen during this time. It plays a vital role in mental health by regulating mood, reducing stress, and supporting cognitive functioning. Sleep helps maintain emotional balance, consolidates memories, and restores energy levels. Sleep disturbances are linked to many mental health conditions like anxiety and depression as well.
