Christened IISR Surasa, the variety has been developed by the institute through a farmers participatory breeding programme. According to IISR, it has excellent organoleptic properties making it more palatable when consumed. Also, it can yield up to 24.33 tonnes per hectare, ensuring consistent production. Surasa is also India's first ginger variety developed exclusively for use as a vegetable.
