Sharavathi evacuees have been waiting for title deeds for decades
RAMACHANDRA V GUNARI @Shivamogga

SHARAVATHI evacuees and Bagair Hukum farmers are optimistic that 2025 would bring a big relief for them as the state government is making efforts to get title deeds for them. Sharavathi evacuees, who lost their lands about 5-6 decades ago, are still waiting for title deeds for the lands the earlier government gave them as compensation for their sacrifice. This issue took a backseat during the tenure of the BJP government in 2019 as the Supreme Court directed the state to take prior permission from the central government to regularise more than 9,000 acres.

"Our Congress government is committed to conserving the interest of the Sharavathi evacuees to get title deeds for their compensated land. The government has appointed a senior counsel to plead on behalf of the government and an interlocutory application was taken up by the Supreme Court. Hope this year our government with the support of the central government would address this long-pending issue," opined B A Ramesh Hegde, chairman of District Areca Growers Association.
