One of those who lit the screens of Indian cinema with very meaningful colours and poignant hues left us on Monday. Shyam Benegal is no more. He was 90.

I was fortunate to work with him for almost 35 years. I was comparatively young when he invited me to write on the Discovery of India documentary. In the screenplay for an episode on the 1942 Quit India movement, I had included two trains and an elephant though I knew no director could afford two trains in a TV series.

IN a bid to support a falling rupee, which lost as much as 125 paise between October 10 and December 24 when it closed at 85.207, the Reserve Bank on Tuesday said it has net sold $9.28 billion on the spot foreign exchange market in October.
