Defending the demolition drive in Nuh after the recent communal violence, the district administration has said the exercise was "not remotely a case of ethnic cleansing" as structures owned by Hindus were also razed.
In an affidavit submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday, the deputy commissioner (DC) of the Muslim majority district, Dhirendra Khadgata, said due procedure of law was followed before the demolitions and most of the encroachers were given notices in advance.
Terming the joint demolition drive by five government departments as a routine exercise, the Nuh administration said under it, 443 structures ~ 162 permanent and 282 temporary ~ were razed till 7 August. It said out of the 354 persons impacted by the demolition drive, 283 were Muslims and 71 Hindus. The affidavit said as per the 2011 Census, the district’s total population was 10,89,263. Out of this, 79.20 per cent were Muslims and 20.37 per cent Hindus.
