Laser hope on spinal injuries

BRITISH scientists have developed a breakthrough laser treatment that could reverse spinal damage.

Doctors would use a fibre optic cable to direct nearinfrared light to an injury.

The technique was tested on rats and succeeded in restoring movement and sensation.

Birmingham University has patented the treatment and is now applying for funding to carry out trials on humans in the next two to three years.

Professor Zubair Ahmed, who led the research, said if approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, it would cost the NHS less than £100 per patient.
