Even today, if kids are not doing well at school, parents stop them from pursuing sports: Rohan

For over two decades, grand slam champion and India’s top-ranked doubles player, Rohan Bopanna, has been focused on the game. But the skilled player now has a new boss: his three-year-old daughter, Tridha. She saw her father play four matches at the Tel Aviv Open and announced outright that at the European Open in Belgium, he should “play only three matches and come back home!”

The 2017 French Open mixed doubles champion won three ATP Tour 250 doubles titles this year, the most recent at the Tel Aviv Open with Dutch partner Matwe Middelkoop. Recently, he reached the doubles quarter-finals of the Paris Masters 2022 and had earlier won at the Adelaide International and Maharashtra Open, paired with Ramkumar Ramanathan. The 42-year-old Coorg-Bengaluru boy is clear about one thing – the game is above everything except his three-year-old at home!

Tennis doesn’t take ageing lightly. How do you do it? I constantly find ways to improve. My game has always been good, but now I try to work on my fitness. I started Iyengar yoga during the pandemic, and it is helping me be pain-free. Yes, some days, the mind tells you to stop, but the body wants to play. You need to find a balance. I can’t compare myself to another 40-year-old doing sprints.

Unfortunately, since I have no cartilage in my knee, I can’t lift heavy weights or run. If you really listen, you can hear your body telling you how it feels. There are days I don’t practice, even during a tournament, as my body tells me, “Buddy, rest. An hour of practice is good. “My coach, Scott Davidoff, has been travelling with me for a long time. I also had a physiotherapist with me earlier. That is the one thing missing on this tour.
