Govt defends benign’ CAA in filing before Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Union government in a late Sunday evening filing told the Supreme Court that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is a benign piece of legislation providing Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis and Christians living in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and justified the exclusion of Muslims from the purview of the law by stressing that it was narrowly tailored to protect the minorities who have faced persecution in the three Islamic countries for the past 70 years.
