Hyderabad: The National Green Tribunal-appointed joint committee has recommended Rs 7 crore environmental compensation against pharmaceutical company Hetero Group for releasing effluents into the sea from its laboratory in AP’s Nakkapalli mandal and illegally laying pipelines in the forest area.
The NGT panel’s recommendation comes soon after alleged Coastal Regulation Zone violations by the pharma group. The NGT was hearing a petition of Kambala Ammoriya and others of Nakkapalli in Anakapalli district (previously a part of Visakhapatnam district), who complained about non-compliance of conditions imposed in the environmental clearance (EC) granted to Hetero Infrastructure SEZ Limited and Hetero Laboratories Ltd.
In February this year, the NGT had appointed a joint committee consisting of experts and officials from the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), APPCB and the ministry of environment and forest (MoEF) to look into the complaint. Hetero Group’s unit is located in N Narasapuram village in Nakkapalli.
