New Delhi: Keeping in view the potential emotional trauma associated with stillbirth or death of a child during the process of delivery (soon after birth), the central government on Friday decided to grant special maternity leave of 60 days to a woman employee in such an eventuality. For the purpose of availing of such leave, a stillbirth has been defined as a baby born with no signs of life at or after 28 weeks of gestation. The department of personnel and training (DoPT), in an office memorandum issued on Friday, said it had been receiving several references or queries requesting for a clarification pertaining to grant of leave or maternity leave to an employee who gives birth to a stillborn baby.
