SUPREME COMMANDER: President Droupadi Murmu inspects the guard of honour after the swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday
New Delhi: Marking an incredible journey from Odisha’s Rairangpur to Raisina Hill, Droupadi Murmu was sworn in as the 15th President of India on Monday. Dressed in a Santhali saree in the colours of the national flag, Murmu, 64, the youngest President yet and the first to be born in independent India, greeted top dignitaries with “Johar”, the traditional Santhali greeting, followed by “Namaskar”, asserting her tribal identity with pride and aplomb.
Administered the oath of office by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana, Murmu, in her maiden address, recalled some of the challenges she overcame and said her election as President of India is not an indivdual triumph, but the triumph of Indian democracy that allowed a poor woman to dream and to rise to occupy the highest constitutional office of the Indian republic.
Only the first tribal head of state and the second woman in the top constitutional post, President Murmu succeeds Ram Nath Kovind.
