Mumbai: The demolition of a crematorium belonging to the Koli community on Erangal beach in Malad (W) was probably at the instance of a big resort situated on an area to its south, the Bombay high court said, dismissing a PIL against the crematorium. It directed the state to reconstruct the crematorium within a month.
“We suspect that the writ petition was filed as the crematorium was affecting the commercial interest of the resort. “The said Make Waves Sea Resort Pvt Ltd was carrying on by the name The Retreat Hotel and Convention Centre at Madh island,” Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Madhav Jamdar said in their September 29 judgment.
