New Delhi: Delhi recorded the highest peak power demand ever in the first week of May on Monday — 6,194 MW. To deal with the unprecedented power demand in the city due to the unabating heatwave, among other measures, power distribution companies BRPL and BYPL, both of the BSES group, have established a war room to review complaints by dedicated teams.
Except for Saturday, the city has seen power demand consistently crossing the 6,000MW mark, beginning with April 28. The following day, the peak demand logged 6,197MW, the highest ever for the month of April in the capital.
Last month, Delhi’s peak power demand clocked an all-time high for the month of April on six occasions in quick succession, each time breaking the previous record. On April 19, it was 5,735MW, the following day 5,761MW, 5,781MW on August 21, 5,786MW on April 27, and 6,050MW on April 28 before the new record of 6,917MW was established on April 29.
The month of May began with Sunday’s peak demand of 6,048MW followed by a record-breaking 6,194MW on Monday. Delhi’s all-time high peak power demand of 7,409MW was recorded on July 2, 2019. The city is expected to breach the 8,000-MW mark this summer.
