Outlining the contribution of 15 prominent women who were members of the constituent assembly, which was tasked with preparing the Constitution of India, Justice BV Nagarathna on Saturday said that the founders of the Constitution helped raise a shrine of liberty and fraternity and women members like Sarojini Naidu and Sucheta Kripalani made sure that a special provision favouring women and children was inserted in the Constitution.

Justice Nagarathna was the chief guest at Bennett University where Constitution Week celebrations under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav began on Saturday.

The SC judge educated the attendees about reclaiming the sacrosanctity of judicial review by the courts in all cases where the basic structure of the Constitution was under attack because of the legislature. "The basic structure of the Constitution is the permanent feature of our Constitution and no amendment can take this away. It is my honest hope that the doctrine will serve as a guide post. Each one of us in the legal fraternity and all citizens of India should follow the Constitution dicta," Justice Nagarathana said.
