New Delhi: Delhi government will revamp five iconic markets Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, Kamala Nagar, Khari Baoli and Kirti Nagar- in the first phase of the redevelopment of retail markets.
The names were announced by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal after an eight-member screening committee comprising government officials and representatives of trade and industry submitted its recommendations on Monday.
Kejriwal said the government would "redevelop and rebrand" them as shopping hotspots to ensure the markets generate more business and create employment. He added that in the next six weeks the government would launch a competition to finalise the new design of these markets.
The redevelopment of retail markets was announced by deputy CM Manish Sisodia in his "Rozgar Budget" speech in March as one of the several new schemes envisioned by the government to create 20 lakh new jobs in the next five years.
