New Delhi: The race for the next Congress president narrowed down to two candidates, Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor, on Saturday with Congress’s central election authority chief Madhusudan Mistry announcing that the nomination papers of the third candidate, KN Tripathi, had been rejected after being scrutinised. Kharge has resigned as the leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha as per the party’s ‘one per, one post’ principle.
While the last date for withdrawal of candidature is October 8, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor indicated that he is unlikely to pull out of the race, the results of which are seen as a foregone conclusion in favour of Kharge, regarded as the party’s “official” candidate.
